Greetings! Happy New Year from C. Eule Dance ! Reflecting on the past year, I realize that 2007 was our most active yet, with much more to look forward to in 2008!
Our first project of 2007 merged the visual art of Yuliya Lanina and the musical composition of another long time collaborator, Jeremy Kasha to create "Flight of Fantasy." Ms. Lanina designed the butterfly costumes and set, and Mr. Kasha designed the sound and composed original music for the score. C. Eule Dance unveiled the work in The Lab Gallery in midtown Manhattan where unexpected pedestrians stumbled across the performance and then crowded the sidewalks to view the work as it unfolded. In addition to the Lab Gallery performances, we mounted another site-specific version of the piece in Riverside Park through Chashama 's Oasis Festival, to be enjoyed by families and park-goers on a beautiful Sunday summer afternoon. Later, a stage version was developed that was eventually featured at The Ailey Citigroup Theater at the start of our summer season. Benefit Party
In June, our annual C. Eule Dance Benefit Party, Spring is in the Air, was held at the elegant Tenri Cultural Center in Greenwich Village. The event featured eclectic food and entertainment. Silent and live auctions were held featuring items that were all generously donated by local merchants, friends, and company members. Of course, no C. Eule Dance benefit would be complete without sneak preview performances of the upcoming season, and the dancers performed coming down the banisters and into the gallery space. We managed to raise a large part of our budget thanks to our generous donors and patrons, and of course, due to the hard working benefit committee and volunteers. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for making the night such a success. Summer Season
The week before our main concert, C. Eule Dance had the opportunity of performing for our largest audience to date. Dancing in the Crossroads - Summer Solstice was an out-door performance on a raised stage in Times Square produced by Dancers Responding to AIDS , an organization that raises money for people living with AIDS and other health issues. Lanes of traffic were closed off to make dance accessible to thousands of people and to raise money for a great cause. We premiered our piece, "Gole Sangam" set to a traditional Persian song. This piece was later featured on the Persian cable television channel, Cyrus TV. June 30th was the opening of our season "In Flight" at the Ailey Citigroup Theater. This show was a big leap for us as it was the largest theater in which we have ever produced our own concert, with a 275-seat house. We were happy to fill all three shows and received a nice feature with a photo in the New York Post. The show consisted of mostly new pieces and a few C. Eule Dance favorites. |
As is a C. Eule Dance hallmark, live music contributed greatly to the event: Monika Jalili with her Persian Band, Noorsaaz, performed "Gole Sangam," and world-class pianist, Assaff Weisman , performed the rare feat of playing piano and dancing at the same time in "Prelude/Nocturne." As part of C. Eule Dance's mission to make dance accessible to the community, our season included an interactive family matinee in which we invited non-profit organizations from around New York City to attend for free. During the show, C. Eule Dancers brought children and other members of the audience on stage to participate in the dancing. C. Eule Dance on the Move Due in large part to the success of our run at Ailey, C. Eule Dance was able to land our first booking agent, Jodi Kaplan, who asked us to join her JK&Associates Boutique Roster. By being a part of this roster, we will now be better able to make connections with theater presenters across the country which will help get C. Eule Dance on the road. We will also be a part of APAP (Association of Performing Arts Presenters), performing in JK&Associates Boutique Roster's showcase in January, 2008. This will give us tremendous exposure to presenters who can help bring C. Eule Dance to venues across the country. We are already in discussions with Missouri State University for a residency and performance there in Fall 2008.
Coming Up Looking ahead, our most exciting news for 2008 is the inception of our new project, Tsuru-no Ongaeshi/ The Crane Wife. I am collaborating with composer, Meg Okura, to create a dance/theater work based on the Japanese Fable of The Crane Wife. The concert version will be shown in excerpts in the "Asian New Year Celebration" at Long Island University's Kumble Theater in February, and we are also hoping to have a site-specific full-length version of the piece next summer in Battery Park. In the site-specific version, we will be inviting school groups and youth organizations to attend and participate in hands-on workshops following the performance, in which children will get to experience making dance, music and visual art for themselves. Please Support Us! Thank you for all your support in the past years. Please continue supporting us by attending our performances and benefit parties and/or by making a tax-deductible donation. Your donation will go towards the creation of our new project and will help bring C. Eule Dance to new audiences. If you are interested in commissioning part of The Crane Wife or would like to be on next year's Benefit Committee, or if you have any connections to theater presenters in your home-towns, please contact us. Your assistance is always appreciated. Purchase a C. Eule Dance DVD! We wish you Happy Holidays, and hope to see you in the New Year! There is much to look forward to in 2008!
