2004 Newsletter H appy Holidays! Another exciting year has come and gone for C. Eule Dance. I have choreographed two new works that have been presented around New York. We were awarded a space grant by the Harkness Center at the 92nd Street Y to create “Nocturne for Piano and Three Dancers,” a collaboration with concert pianist, Alpin Hong. We premiered the piece at “Dance Conversations” at The Flea Theater with pianist James Gibson playing piano. Another new piece still in progress “Suite Brazil,” was showcased in sections at The Bridge for Dance, the Williamsburg Art neXus, HATCH at the Jennifer Muller Studio, and at the HOWL Festival (the opening reception at the Manhattan Borough President’s office, curated by Samara Sussman.) The piece was also performed in a full program at The Marta Valle Public School, where the company volunteered its time to perform an interactive show for the students, and ran a follow-up workshop led by Matthew Wagner and myself. November of this year marked the first out-of-state tour for C. Eule Dance when we were selected by the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California to perform one of my works “With Their Backs Exposed” in their Dance Under The Stars Choreography Festival. I took dancers Edgar Peterson and Carmen Smith to California where we met up with former C. Eule Dance member, Tina Lee. It was a wonderful experience performing in The McCallum’s beautiful 1200 seat theater, and we made some great California contacts. Jeff Britton of The Desert Sun wrote “…an especially sultry, contented atmosphere emerged from Caron Eule’s choreography for a trio from New York who artfully blended yoga, ballet and modern dance.” We are excited to be presenting our first full concert in Manhattan this upcoming spring. Clean Springing 3 will be performed at The Merce Cunningham Studio in Greenwich Village on May 20-22, 2005. Previously presented at The Williamsburg Art neXus, Clean Springing 1 and 2 were exuberantly received by packed houses. The theme of the third installment is innovative multi-disciplinary collaborations. I am working with composers Colin Jacobsen, Jon Diaz (both of whom will be performing live) and Jeremy Kasha. Visual artist, Yuliya Lanina, has painted animated body masks to be worn for a new piece currently in creation, and Masa Nemoto (also the company’s web designer: www.geocities.com/ceuledance) will be creating a film for another new piece. Dancers for the concert will include Cornelius Brown, Kyla Ernst-Alper, Yuu Fujita, Edgar L. Peterson, III, Mathew Wagner, Alexa Weir and myself (pictured in the holiday card/photo by Keith DeCristo), as well as Erin Hunter, Faith Hunter, Molly Phelps, Carmen Smith, Gisela Quinteros, and David M. Zlotchew. Lighting will be designed by Tony Marques. |
C. Eule Dance was also selected by White Wave to present a piece in their COOL New York 2005 DANCE Festival. This performance will take place in DUMBO, Brooklyn during the week of January 27 – February 6. You might ask yourself, how can you get involved with C. Eule Dance? There are many ways. First of all, come support us by being an audience member at an upcoming show. Second, we are planning a benefit party including an auction and live performances for early next spring to raise funds for Clean Springing 3. I am putting together a committee to help organize this fun-filled event. Please let me know if you are interested in being part of the benefit committee. Also, I am looking for goods or services to be donated to the auction. Examples from the last auction included original artwork, dinner at local restaurants, a private pilates lesson, and a session of Japanese lessons. Auction donors will receive complimentary tickets to the party along with advertising (not to mention the visibility from having your company or service featured in the auction.) Last, but not least, your tax deductible donations are always greatly appreciated. Funds are needed for artists’ stipends, studio and theater rental, lighting, costumes, sets, marketing, and postage. Get your tax deduction for 2004 by sending in a donation before the end of the year! Also, companies like The New York Times and IBM make matching donations. Check if yours does to double the contribution! Donors will be recognized in our program: $1-$49 Friend Please make your checks payable to The Field*, earmarked and mailed to C. Eule Dance, 305 W. 105 St. #2A, New York, NY 10025. Thanks for all your support and encouragement in the past years. I wish you the best for the New Year and hope to see you in 2005! Warm Regards, |
